My Big, Fat Desi Wedding is an anthology by eight award-winning and debut authors. Centered around love, family, hope, and of course, Desi weddings, these stories took me on a journey to the Indian subcontinent and I witnessed these entertaining and glamourous stories unfold. But frankly speaking, I enjoyed the spectacular dances, the drama, and the mouthwatering Desi foods a bit more than the stories themselves!
The narration and premise of most of the stories are suitable for YA readers, the target audience. A few of the stories might appear frivolous and cheesy to mature readers. I feel readers who are aware of the cultural nuances might appreciate the events and happenings a bit more than those unfamiliar with the culture and tradition of the Indian subcontinent.
Most of the stories are equally well-written. Sehra, A Wedding Recipe For Disaster, and A Very Bloody Kalyanam are the ones I liked the most.
A few quotes I loved
When it comes to love, no one is safe.
-From the story“A Cynic at a Shaadi”
Maybe the act of becoming what you thought you were meant to be, of doing what you believed you were meant to do, always involved disappointing someone who had dreamt of a different path for you.”
–From the story “Sehra.”
“Give people a chance. You might learn something.”
-From the story “The Wedding Biryani.”
My Big, Fat Desi Wedding is a culinary treat as well as a magical escape to grand Desi weddings. Even though I didn’t enjoy it much, I would still recommend it to fans of YA stories.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and Page Street Publishing. This review reflects my honest and voluntary opinion.
