Stories from the Puranas

The Daivya Sutras, Stories from the Puranas, is a tribute to Hindu mythology by the author duo Mona Verma and Sanjna Verma.

This is the second mythological retelling I have read this year. I read Satyarth Nayak’s Mahagatha: 100 Tales from the Puranas recently. While Nayak’s book is an in-depth exploration of Pauranic stories, Verma’s collection is concise and includes 24 stories. Despite the difference in the number of stories, both books are well-written and enjoyable.

Every chapter of The Daivya Sutras begins with a mention of the original Puranas and a brief description of the main characters.

The stories are from various Puranas like Padam Purana, Agni Purana, Brahmavaivarta Purana, Shiv Maha Purana, Varah Purana, Vayu Purana, Srimad Bhagvata Purana, etc to name a few.

There are certain aspects of this book that I found truly remarkable.

The authors have ensured the essence of the original stories remains undiluted. They have not taken liberties and twisted the narration to suit modern times and current themes.

The balanced tone and apt vocabulary make this book suitable even for younger readers.

I loved reading the explanation of mantras and their origin and importance. The authors have even mentioned the original and present location of Teerthsthals.

My review would be incomplete if I don’t mention the glorious cover page and illustrations.

Sharing a few favourite lines –

It was a moment of reckoning, for he understood that erudition and intellect are futile until one is compassionate to those around him.

The richest of gifts given without love is futile as compared to the humble offering given with love.

The Daivya Sutras is an enriching book. It’s full of knowledge and wisdom and takes us back to our roots.
