Do I Not Marry? The Marriage vs Live-in Conundrum by Aditi Jindal is a contemporary exploration of a universal dilemma many millennials face: marriage or live-in relationships. Set in urban India, the novel humorously addresses the notion that the grass is always greener on the other side, showcasing the struggles and desires of two friends navigating contrasting relationship choices.
The narrative alternates between Kiara and Neeti, two women in their 30s with different perspectives on commitment. Kiara, a newlywed, feels disillusioned about her marriage as her weekends revolve around her husband’s extended family, leaving her craving the romantic connection she had imagined. Neeti, on the other hand, is content in a live-in relationship with her partner, Anish, and sees no reason to formalize their bond through marriage. However, her mother’s nagging concerns about the future begin to sow doubts, clouding her previously clear conviction.
Jindal excels in crafting characters that are modern, flawed, and relatable. Both Kiara and Neeti are ambitious women with distinct personalities, and their inner conflicts are portrayed in a way that resonates with readers. The alternating viewpoints provide depth, allowing readers to connect with each woman’s journey while maintaining a distinction in voice and tone.
Themes such as work-life balance, societal expectations, and the struggles of metro city life are central to the novel, making it highly relatable for most urban readers. The simplicity of the writing and the fast pace of the story enhance its appeal, ensuring it is an easy, enjoyable read.
However, the novel falters in its somewhat stereotypical portrayal of familial expectations, particularly in Kiara’s story. The repetition of family dinners, cultural expectations about marriage, and Kiara’s continuous adjustment struggles gets monotonous. In contrast, Neeti’s storyline feels fresher and more engaging, providing a more compelling arc as she grapples with her future and her mother’s influence.
Gaurav embodies the stereotypical pampered north Indian boy, steeped in traditional values and familial obligations. In contrast, Anish brings a refreshing change with his open-minded approach and progressive outlook on relationships. This difference in personalities makes Anish feel like a breath of fresh air in the story, offering a more modern, easygoing perspective that challenges the traditional mould.
While the book offers a thoughtful look at modern relationships, it follows a somewhat predictable path and wraps up on an expected note. Nonetheless, it is an entertaining and relatable portrayal of contemporary relationship dilemmas, particularly for urban women.
Do I Not Marry? provides an engaging exploration of the marriage versus live-in debate, with well-drawn characters and timely themes, though it does stick to familiar tropes along the way. It’s an enjoyable, light read, perfect for when you are in the mood for something quick and breezy.
