Eye On You by Kanchana Banerjee is a well-plotted whodunnit set in today’s world. The idea of privacy and dangers of over-sharing in the online world form the interesting premise of this novel. The chilling cover picture fits the story to t.
Set in Gurgaon, our main protagonist is Myra, a young, independent, single working woman. A Social Media Influencer, she spends every waking moment sharing intimate moments of her life with her online family. After an open-house party in her home, she wakes up the following morning and discovers that she has been raped. But to her horror, she has no memory of the incident or the perpetrator.
And thus begins Myra’s painful fight for justice. The path ahead is filled with obstacles, twists, and turns. Disappointments, shock, and betrayal are her co-companions on this journey.
The motley of varied characters adds charm to the plot – fleshed out in-depth, with each coming across clearly with their distinct voice and presence. With a dual narration, the author coneys the character’s conflicting thoughts, biases, feelings and challenges clearly. There are two chapters which are in the mysterious perpetrator’s voice, and we get to enter his creepy brain.
The author’s keen eye to detailing is clear in the descriptions and setting. However, she does not go overboard with that aspect, ensuring the focus remains on the mystery all the time.
With the setting being in Gurgaon, the author also highlights the difference in class and mindset between the characters. She has realistically portrayed the battle between the ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’. Banerjee’s usage of Hindi words added authenticity to the character and setting.
Though the author attempts to deceive the readers, the subtle clues are a tad bit obvious for fans of this genre. Despite figuring out the villain’s identity early on, I continued for the thill of it.
‘Eye On You’ reflects our current times, wherein today’s youth are addicted to an active and excess online presence.
It is a fast-paced story without the element of gore overpowering the narration.
‘Revenge is a dish best never served’ is my favourite quote from this racy thriller.
