Raining Drops of Rainbow Verses

Raining Drops of Rainbow Verses is Indrani Chowdhury‘s debut. It is a collection of 25 poems. Just like the colours of the rainbow, there are myriad hues in these verses. The poet mentions in the preface, ‘good poetry can truly touch your soul,’ and that is the effect these poems had on me.

Separated under four sections—‘People & Relations’, ‘Nature & Place’, ‘Musings’, and ‘Miscellaneous’, the poetic quills are emotional and profound, while a few are funny. Indrani has touched upon myriad themes—love, nostalgia, mythology, nature and even mathematics.

The Revenge of the House Lizard is quite comical. Lizards terrify me to the core. While reading this, I felt I was the one shrieking and running away in defeat.

I am quoting a few lines from Letters of Parvati, in which a widow Parvati has written letters to the poet’s great-grandmother Gauri. This is one of the most powerful poems in this anthology.  

… This time, I have no choice but to life a life of lies,

As a devoted devotee of our gods upright.

I have been robbed of love, of my life

And they claim it is the only path to save a widow’s soul,

From falling for worldly delights.

Guwahati is a nostalgic trip to the poets’ hometown, and it is clear from the verses how much the place means to her.

Butterflies, Memories and The Language of Music are few other poems I enjoyed a lot.

The beauty of this collection lies in its simplicity. The vocabulary is really simple; one need not bother with a dictionary while reading these poems.
